McClellan's analysis of doctrine was spot on. Theists often use their scripture's age as evidence of divine permanence but the doctrine itself is often fluid. Doctrine kinda has to be, really, to survive so many cultural changes over decades. Recently there's been a break in the Methodist and Baptist Churches in America over gay marriage and female bishops. Whether the bible says that's OK or not just depends on who you ask but the book itself ain't part of the conversation. It can't be, it can't talk and clarify itself
